Nature trails, animal shows, a state-of-the-art wildlife hospital, and much more are featured at The Living Desert, a unique zoo and botanical garden. The exhibits include over 1,600 species of plants and 140 species of animals from the deserts of North America and Africa. Additionally, the park boasts a list of over 150 species of free-flying birds and is the best place in the world to view roadrunners. The park has records of over 30 species of free crawling reptiles including chuckwallas, zebra-tailed lizards, and desert iguanas. The more than 20 species of free-roaming mammals are mostly out of sight during the day, but tracks of coyote, bobcat, gray fox, and black-tailed jackrabbit can be seen on some of the dusty trails. The botanical gardens attract over 30 species of butterflies and the ponds attract over 20 species of dragonflies, including queen butterflies, large orange sulphurs, roseate skimmers, and Mexican amberwings.
